Human oversight · THE LAB AI Work Audit™

Where did the human go? An audit of oversight in one AI workflow.

Human oversight is rarely removed on purpose. It erodes: one skipped review, one trusted default, one “it’s always been fine.” This audit finds where a person still needs to be, and where they have quietly stopped being.

Most guidance on human oversight of AI is written for large organizations with governance teams. In an owner-led business, oversight is a practical question: which outputs does a person look at before they matter, what are they looking for, and what do they do if it is wrong?

THE LAB AI Work Audit™ answers those questions for one real workflow. Instead of a policy, you leave with named approval gates, a verification checklist your team can actually run, and three corrections in priority order.

How oversight erodes

Review became a glance

A person is nominally in the loop, but the volume or speed means they are approving rather than reviewing.

The default became the decision

The AI’s suggested classification, price, or reply is accepted unless something looks off, and nothing usually looks off.

Nobody owns the exception

When the model hits a case it was not designed for, there is no defined person or step that catches it.

The record is the output

The only trace of how a decision was made is the decision itself. The inputs and assumptions are gone.

What the audit looks at

One workflow, examined end to end in a 60–90 minute session.

  • Every point in the workflow where a person is assumed to be reviewing, and whether they actually are.
  • Which decisions the AI is making that a person used to make: routing, priority, eligibility, tone, next step.
  • Whether the reviewer has what they need to catch an error, or is only seeing the finished output.
  • Where an approval gate is genuinely required and where a lighter verification step would do.
  • Who is accountable when the AI is wrong, and whether they know it.

You receive written findings within 48 hours: AI Workflow Map, Human Approval Gates, Verification Checklist, Three Priority Corrections, and a 30-Day Action Target. See the full method.

Questions

Does more human oversight just mean slower work?
Not necessarily. Most workflows have a few points where approval genuinely matters and many where a quick verification is enough. The audit distinguishes between them so oversight is concentrated where it counts.
Will you tell us to stop using AI?
No. The audit is about seeing the work clearly, not reducing it. The corrections are usually about placement of review and verification, not removal of the tool.
Is this a compliance certification or legal advice?
No. The audit is an operational review of one workflow. It is not legal advice, a compliance certification, a cybersecurity penetration test, or a guarantee that risk has been eliminated.
Do you need access to our systems or client data?
No. The audit is a structured walkthrough with the people who run the work. We do not ask for logins, and we ask you not to share credentials or sensitive customer records.
